Breaking Barriers with the adidas Tubular Lineage

An innovation during the early 90s, adidas' Tubular technology broke barriers with its cutting-edge design combined with modern construction. Today, the Tubular heritage is solidified with numerous models that serves as a unique design language for both male and female consumers.

A progressive line under adidas Originals, the fashion-forward sneaker dynasty is spearheaded with the use of bold-yet-constructive blueprints.

Learn more about its history, plus get a glimpse of the latest Tubular models below.

Tubular technology was originally designed for basketball training during the late 80s. However, the advancement had its first break 23 years ago, in form of a running silhouette.

The "Tubular" moniker, coined for its outsole design was modelled after the tubing of car tires, which provided extra grip and traction.

Debuting in 1993, the Tubular II revolutionized running shoes by front-lining the technology. The original pair, which was provided with an external pump, adjusted the cushioning of the sole by inflating it.

Fast forward to November 2014 as adidas introduced the Tubular Runner - leaving the world in shock with its modern-minimalist design. Envisioned by adidas Originals’ Vice President of Global Design, Nic Galway, the lifestyle sneaker regenerated the German brand's sport-heritage lineage for fashion-savvy consumers.

Seen in 4 original colorways, Black, Navy, Gray, and Maroon, the sneaker was instantly sold-out at Sole Academy.

Complimenting the striking-zen elements of the Runner, adidas launched the Tubular Moc Runner early in 2015. Inspired by Hawaii's deep culture, the sneaker's organic moccasin motif offered a laid-back feel.

Below are more models from 2015 to 2016.

Being a staple in streetwear, the Tubular line receives a mid-cut sneaker in the form of the Doom. Utilizing Primeknit technology with its sock-like upper, the sneaker is finished off with straps to add to a more futuristic feel. The Tubular Doom was immediately embraced by the streetwear scene, including Ronnie Fieg's Kith - who had a collaborative model during its initial launch.

Designed for the ladies, the Viral's streamlined design is emphasized with the use of three triangles representing the brand. The sneaker, which featured an elastic strap across its forefoot, fits around the consumers' feet with the help of a unique cage lacing system.

Being a part of the style family that pushes the boundaries of design, the Tubular Radial transformed the iconic outsole with the use of its "ragged design", making it stand out among the rest.

Similar to the design language of the Doom, the Tubular Nova's low-top shape made it an instant choice for sneaker enthusiasts. Building on the legacy of the 1993 Tubular Runner, the Nova is considered to be as the fresh evolution of the original sneaker.

Redefined for the female consumer in-mind, the Tubular Defiant's cutting-edge upper construction is built with the use of Neoprene.

Today, December 8, 2016, the Tubular Defiant line is updated with a snakeskin-like pattern upper for the ladies. A huge day for the series, adidas is set to release 8 new variations including its latest member of the Tubular family.

The Tubular Entrap finally receives a "Triple White" model. Expanding on the original design concept, the Entrap features a split-pattern upper built in a mix of textured mesh, nubuck and neoprene.

Perfect for the Holiday season, adidas launches the Tubular Doom in Primeknit with a pale lightbrown shade and skin-tone colors. Dubbed as "Pale Nude", the color reflects on one of the most sought-after hues this coming 2017.

The Tubular legacy continues with the Shadow. The low-top sneaker features a premium perforated leather upper which reminisces the Yeezy BOOST 350's iconic shape. Intended between street culture and high fashion, the Tubular Shadow will be made available in three sophisticated colorways, namely White, Olive, and Tan.

An exploration of adidas Originals' most progressive design perspectives, its cutting-edge tooling follows the tradition of the Tubular line.

The adidas Tubular, a lineage born in sport, raised in the world of fashion is set to break boundaries with its innovative designs for the streets.
