The Crazy Treatment: Nike's Air Sock Racer

First seen 31 years ago as a lightweight marathon sneaker, Nike’s Air Sock Racer was instantly embraced by triathletes for its sleek and flexible upper. Inspired by aqua socks, the runner fits comfortably with its breathable slip-on mesh upper guided by two straps for superior support. Learn more about the history of one of the most headlined sneakers during the 80's.

The Nike Air Sock Racer was undoubtedly designed ahead of its time with its stretchable elastic mesh upper during its first release in 1986. With its advancements in materials, fit, and design, the Sock Racer is recognized as one of the forefathers of Nike’s Free technology. Its striking design paved the way for innovative models from the Air Presto to the Sock Dart, and even Flyknit technology.

Designed by the legendary Bruce Kilgore, the sneaker is a combination of polyurethane foam sole and Nike’s full-length airbag midsole. This 2017, the Swoosh re-imagines its popular runner with Flyknit technology, giving birth to the Nike Air Sock Racer Ultra Flyknit.

A sneaker with a network of innovations, the Sock Racer is fully-equipped to keep up with today’s technology, comfort, and design needs. The 2017 update also increases breathability and flexibility with its redesigned straps giving additional support for multi-direction movements.

The 3-decade wait is over as the Nike Air Sock Racer is now on its way. Be the first to know as it arrives soon at Sole Academy on April 27. Stay tuned for more release info.
